A New York-based real estate professional, Jeffrey Pikus is passionate about his work in the nonprofit sector. In addition to his fundraising efforts for Hale House, Jeffrey Pikus is the founder of Kids Do Care, Ltd., which facilitates correspondence between active duty members of the United States Armed Forces and elementary school children.
Jeffrey Pikus was inspired to establish the nonprofit in 2006, but its origins extend all the way back to 1965, when his mother first encouraged her Grade 3 students to write letters to soldiers stationed in Vietnam. According to his mother, the idea prompted students to express compassion for individuals they otherwise didn't know and better understand the courage of the soldiers involved.
Beyond allowing students to correspond with men and women in the United States military, Mr. Pikus' Kids Do Care organization coordinates military personnel to participate in a school assembly, where they can share their personal experiences and discuss the history and mission of the military. Lesson plans for these sessions involve sample questions, such as "Who protects our country?" and "If we did not have soldiers to protect us and our freedoms, what would America be like?"
